Central Nervous System Flashcards
Function of Pre-Motor Cortex?
Helps plan movements
Coordinates several muscle groups at once
Function of Primary motor cortex?
Allows use to control voluntary movement of muscles
Function of somatosensory cortex?
Sensory receptors from skin muscles joints and tendons interpreted
Function of Primary Visual cortex
Receives visual info from retina of the eye
Function of visual association cortex
Uses post visual experience to interpret stimuli
Cerebellum function?
Balance coordination etc
Auditory association cortex function?
Perception of sound stimuli
Eg speech, scream, music
Primary auditory cortex function?
Interprets sound energy, loudness + location
Brocas speech area function
Motor speech area, alerts muscles innervated in speech production
Medulla Function?
- Relays ascending sensory pathway impulses from skin and proprioception through nuclei cuneatus and gracious
- contains nuclei of CN 8,9,10,12
- site of decussation and pyramids
- contains visceral nuclei controlling AR, blood vessel diameter, RR, cough
Pons functions?
- Relays info from cerebrum to cerebellum
- cooperates with medullary respiratory centres to control resp. Rate and depth
- contains nuclei CN 5,6,7
- contains projection fibres
Midbrain functions?
- Contains visual(sup. Colliculi) and auditory(inf. Colliculi) nervous centres
- contains subcortical motor centres (substantiated Niagra + red nuclei)
- contains projection fibres
What are the 5 areas of the internal capsule?
Anterior limb Genu Posterior limb Retrolentiform/retrolenticular Sublentiform/sublenticular (all have topographic relations with adjacent gray matter)
Three types of fibres found in the cerebral hemisphere?
Association fibres
Commissural fibres
Projection fibres
3 layers of meninges
Pia mater
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
