A

FLO should ID the cultural origin of the victims family and ensure they are familiar with relevant cultural beliefs and protocols to enhance relations with the family and to contribute to the victim profile

What financial assistance is available

A

Discretionary grant of up to $1500 for families of homicide victims
Free counselling for families or murder and manslaughter victims. Initially 6 hrs are approved with the option to increase to 15hrs. Counselling up to a maximum of 30hrs may be approved if required.

ACC can help towards burial costs, cremations and related ceremonies

  1. The initial contact with the family members is vital for the FLO as it lays the foundations for a successful partnership. Contact must be honest and as far as possible open. What early issues should the FLO resolve?
A

Provide appropriate information to the family concerning the death and the process i.e. post mortem procedures

  • Provide the family with the “When someone dies” booklet which sets out the families rights and the coronial process. Note family can object to a post-mortem within 24hrs.
  • Obtain any information from family evidence that may be valuable to the investigation an pass on to OC Investigations
  • Facilitate appropriate resources i.e. transport
  • Protect family from unwanted media attention
  • At the direction of OC Investigation arrange for family to meet Crown Solicitor

A

Police must seek the views of the family regarding the disposal of such samples, however, and offer to dispose of them on behalf of the family.
