What equipment do you need for thoracocentesis?
A
- I/V catheter or needle (~21ga 1”)
- Sterile 10-20 ml syringe
- Extension tubing and three way tap
- Lab sample pots

What tests can be carried out on pleural fluid?
A
- Direct smears for cytology
- Aerobic and anaerobic culture and sensitivity
- SG, protein, clotting characteristics
- Presence of chylomicrons, TG’s
- Total cell counts

What are the indications for using a chest drain?
A
- Management of dyspnoea due to pleural fluid or air
- Following thoracotomy
- Delivery of treatment (lavage, antibiotics etc)
