Field Sobriety Test (FST)
Can you pull someone over if you assume they are driving under the influence?
NO - have to have probable cause. They had to break a traffic violation to initially pull over. Such as swerving, headlight out, etc.
What are the 3 questions you ask before beginning FST’s.
(1) Are you willing to perform FST?
(2) Are you currently on any medications?
(3) Do you have any injuries or physical disabilities which may prevention from performing these tests?
Type of standardized FST that refers to an involuntary jerking of the eyeballs that occurs as the eyes gaze toward the side. In addition to being involuntary, the jerking is also unconscious. There person is unaware that the jerking is happening and is powerless to stop or control it.
Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus
Type of standardized FST that has two stages: Instruction stage where the subject must stand on a line with feet in the heel-to-toe position, arms at sides, and listen to instructions; and walking stage where they have to walk the line. 68% reliable.
Walk & Turn
Type of standardized FST that is a divided attention test consisting of two stages: instruction stage, and balancing and counting stage. 65% reliable.
