IAH 3 - Innate immune cell functions Flashcards
During life what is red bone marrow replaced with?
Yellow bone marrow
How come if bed ridden, patients can accumulate lymph?
Lymph flow relies on muscular activity
What does red bone marrow produce?
Leukocytes
How is red bone marrow homeostatically controlled?
Different branches can be switched on/off depending on demands
What does the thymus produce?
T-lymphocytes
What is shape of the thymus?
Small bilobed organ above the heart
What is haematopoiesis?
Blood cell development in the bone marrow
What is haematopoiesis driven by?
Cytokine production and stroma?
What is the stroma?
Connective tissue cells which have a structural/functional role in every organ
What are the 2 mechanisms of WBC production?
Lymphoid and myeloid line
What does NK cells stand for?
Natural Killer cells
What type of immunity are NK cells involved with?
Anti viral immunity
What is the outer layer of the thymus?
Fibrous capsule
What are the 2 main sections of the thymus?
Medulla (inner)
Cortex (outer)
How are T cells maturated?
Useless T-cells destroyed and useful are retained
