Q

Choose one of the 7 major themes of the novel and explain how it is developed throughout the novel.

A

Poverty. Poverty is big in this story. All 3 characters are trapped with poverty in some way. Ethan cannot leave the farm because he has no education because of his parents health. Zeena is too ill to provide for herself and Ethan is not heartless enough to leave her.Mattie is penniless and must rely on her cousin’s family for financial support. Regarding the poverty of Zeena, she refuses to use her pickle dish. The reason she gets so fussy over her possession with the dish is because of poverty. At the end of the story poverty has become a soul destroyer, Ethan is forced into happiness over and over, and Mattie is too crippled to leave the farm. Poverty over takes these characters life’s little by little.
