pathophysiology of vascular dementia

A

progressive loss of brain function due to poor blood flow long term to the brain
- typically due to a series of strokes

  1. neurons are only able to function in aerobic conditions where there is constant oxygen and glucose supply
  2. Atherosclerosis -> chronic ischaemia -> necrosis of brain tissue

  1. Temporal lobe stroke - difficulty with memory
  2. Parietal lobs stroke - loss of speech aphasia
  3. Frontal lobe stroke - personality changes
