At the arteriole end of a lymphatic capillary; what direction does the fluid move in and due to what pressure?
Fluid moves out of the capillary due to hydrostatic pressure.
At the venous end of a lymphatic capillary; what direction does the fluid move in and due to what pressure?
Fluid moves into the cell by osmotic pressure.
Where are there no lymphatic systems in the body?
The eye and the central nervous system.
What is the purpose of lymph nodes?
The lymph nodes contain lymphocytes that filter excess fluid within the body and respond to any harmful substances.
What (2) kinds of filtration occur in the lymph nodes? Explain them.
Mechanical: Rate of flow slows down as the fluid spreads across the subcapsular sinuses, large particles fall to the floor of the sinus.
Biological: Macrophages break down (phagocytose) the fallen particles.
What kind of macrophage is present in the lymph nodes? How does it’s structure fit its purpose?
Stellate macrophages: Long processes allow many macrophages to create a mesh. This mesh traps the falling particles/debris.
What lymphocytes are present at the outer cortex of the lymph node?
B lymphocytes
What lymphocytes are present at the inner cortex of the lymph node?
T lymphocytes
What lymphocytes are present in the medullary cords of the lymph node?
B lymphocytes
What are lymphoid nodules and where are they found?
An antibody response, found at sites where ONLY B cells are present.
What epithelium are tonsillar crypts composed of?
Stratified squamous non-keratinised epithelium.
