Bullying
Repeatedly doing or saying hurtful things with the intent to harm. Unlike fighting, bullying, occurs within the context of a “power imbalance” (real or percieved) between the bully and the victim.
Cyberbullying
Using technology to threaten, harass, or harm another individual.
Educational Premium
The monetary return one receives by pursuing further education . This can be calculated based on the average earnings for people with various degrees of education.
Gender Intensification
Two linked phenomena of adolescence:
- increased pressure to conform to gendered expectations
- an increased rigidity regarding gender norms
Hidden Curriculum
The lessons and rules learned in school that is not part of what is formally transmitted by the teachers and the official curriculum.
Hostile Environment
Originally an American legal category that describes a workplace where workers are are subjected to sexual harassment and therefore fear the workplace. The concept can be transferred to schools.
Imperial Manhood
A concept that linked “manliness” to one’s duty to the British Empire and to the success and superiority of British culture; this idea had strong effects on the education in the nineteenth century.
LGBTQ
Today, the most commonly used term used to encompass all non-heterosexuals, Canada especially includes 2S for two-spirited.
Moral Panic
A popular idea about societal decline; often, links a real or imagined social problem to a particular group of people. eg. crime linked to single mothers/fatherlessness
Self-esteem
A person’s sense of self-worth. It can be measured by particular interactions or globally.
Sexual Harassment
A broad concept that encompasses many behaviours: unwelcomed sexual attention, benefits for sexual attention, coercion, bullying based on gender.
Slut-Shaming
Discrimination, harassment, bullying, and violence against girls and women who are perceived as violating sexual and gender norms.
Title IX
A US law, enacted in 1972, that states, “No person in the US shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be sujected to discrimination of any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
