What are the characteristics of a strong sense of place?
- strong sense of identity and character
- felt deeply by local inhabitants
- exists independently of any individual perceptions or lived experiences
- sense of place derives from the natural environment as well from a mix of natural and cultural features in the landscape and the people who occupy the place
What is meaning of a place?
How a person perceives a particular place and what the place means to them - this can be subjective
How does a person determine their sense of place?
By the outcome of many connections involving interacting and internal factors as well as a range of external factors such as global, national, regional and local influences
What are some human factors that influence our perception of both rural and urban areas?
Age, level of education, income, cultural beliefs etc
What are some accessibility factors that influence our perception of both rural and urban areas?
Access to employment, access to services, access to public transport, affordable housing etc
What are some environmental factors that influence our perception of both rural and urban areas?
Levels of pollution, levels of crime, housing conditions, physical geography etc
