What is Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?

Generally outline the pathophysiology.

A

Most common chronic rheum disease in children.

Not completely understood - there is a genentic suseptability.

  • Immune response
  • Pro-inflammatory markers
  • Presnce of antibodies

What are the clinical features of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?

A

Arthritis for at least 6 weeks

  • Morning stiffness/jelling
  • Irritability / refusal to walk in toddlers
  • School absence or limited ability in physical activity
  • Rash / fever
  • Fatigue
  • Poor appetite / wt loss
  • Delayed puberty

  • Septic arthritis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Transient Synovitis

What sings may be seen on examination in JIA?

A
  • Swelling
    • Periarticular soft tissue oedema
    • Intraarticular effusion
    • Hypertrophy of synovial membrane
  • Tenosynovitis (swollen tendons)
  • Pain
  • Joint held in position of max. comfort
  • Limited range of motion at extremities.
