A

We can be purposely taught particular behaviors, attitudes, values, and aspects of our culture that we a society want each generation to learn and adhere to.

A

People can be taught prejudices, improper or bad behavior that many may engage in.

What does Social Structure refer to?

A

Refers to the typical patterns of a group such as the usual relations btw people
- people learn their behaviors and activities because of their location in their social structure

A

Refers to the position that someone occupies

  • also serves as a guide for our behavior
  • Status is a NOUN

Status Sets

A

Refer to all of the statuses or positions that one occupies

Ex: child, student, employee, sibling, niece, nephew, grandchild, etc.

Ascribed Status

A

Involuntary in that it is a position that one is born into such as sex, race, ethnicity, parents’ SES, oldest child, etc.

Achieved Status

A

This voluntary in that it’s a position you earn or accomplish such as level of education, job, career, your own SES, marital status (except single), etc.

A

Status that becomes dominant in one’s life. It’s the most important Status to you that you occupy

Status Inconsistency

A

This occurs when there is a mismatch among an individual’s various statuses
Ex: ranking high on some dimensions of a status and low on dimensions of another status one occupies
- high socio economic status, but occupation is a drug dealer
