What is Socialization?
The process by which a biological being becomes a social being
What is social?
A process that is ongoing throughout our lives.
Socialization occurs on both a conscious level and unconscious level.
Socialization on a Conscious level
We can be purposely taught particular behaviors, attitudes, values, and aspects of our culture that we a society want each generation to learn and adhere to.
Socialization on an Unconscious Level
People can be taught prejudices, improper or bad behavior that many may engage in.
(It’s ok to cheat on your taxes)
What are the 6 Components of Social Structure?
- Culture
- Pivotal Institutions
- Social Class
- Groups
- Social Status
- Roles
What does Social Structure refer to?
Refers to the typical patterns of a group such as the usual relations btw people
- people learn their behaviors and activities because of their location in their social structure
Social Class is based on what 3 factors?
- Income
- Education: level of educational attainment
- Occupational Prestige
- these are often referred to as SES: Socio-Economic Status
Social Status
Refers to the position that someone occupies
- also serves as a guide for our behavior
- Status is a NOUN
Status Sets
Refer to all of the statuses or positions that one occupies
Ex: child, student, employee, sibling, niece, nephew, grandchild, etc.
Ascribed Status
Involuntary in that it is a position that one is born into such as sex, race, ethnicity, parents’ SES, oldest child, etc.
Achieved Status
This voluntary in that it’s a position you earn or accomplish such as level of education, job, career, your own SES, marital status (except single), etc.
Status Symbol
These are signs that identify a status
Ex: wedding ring, diploma, etc.
Master Status
Status that becomes dominant in one’s life. It’s the most important Status to you that you occupy
Status Inconsistency
This occurs when there is a mismatch among an individual’s various statuses
Ex: ranking high on some dimensions of a status and low on dimensions of another status one occupies
- high socio economic status, but occupation is a drug dealer
Roles
One occupies a status but plays a role
- a status in action
VERB - behaviors/obligations/privileges associated with status
