Interpreting Statistical Findings Flashcards
Randomised control trial
A standardised experimental intervention which involves 2 groups, that are representative of the target population, a control group and an experimental group.
The groups are large enough to detect a statistical difference and are divided by randomised allocation.
What is a double blind trial
Double blind trials are where neither the clinician or the patient know whether they are in the control (placebo) group or the experimental group
Validity
Measuring what it is supposed to measure
Reliability
The extent to which a measurement gives results that are consistent when repeated
What do statistical tests do?
They test the effectiveness of an intervention (experiment)
Hypotheses
To determine which outcome variables need to be measured and tested and reflecting a degree of certainty with which outcome can be predicted
What is the purpose of the control group?
It allows potential sources of bias to be identified by creating a situation where the independent variable (what is being tested on the experimental group) cannot influence the results
What allows you to create a representative sample of adequate size
