Ed Howell capture story (page 63 Yellowstone Story I)

A

Buffalo scalps sold for $100-$300 a piece a this time. Morning of March 12, 1894, Scout Felix Burgess and Sergeant Troike of the US Cavalry set off on skis, east of the Yellowstone River. First found 6 scalps hanging in tree. Then found camp, tracks. Then saw him pursue a herd, shoot and kill several bison. While Ed scalped, Burgess crossed 200 yards of open snow to get within pistol range of a man with a rifle and a dog to warn him. Ed: they could not have taken him if he had seen them first. Tried to kill dog.

Why does Yellowstone exist in three states?

A

The Yellowstone Nat’l Park Protection Act of 1872 defined the area as basically from the latitude of the junction of Gardiner’s River and the Yellowstone River to 10 miles east and south of Yellowstone Lake, and 15 miles west of Shoshone Lake. In 1872, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho were not states yet.

Isabel Deming Basset Wasson of NY. M.A. in geology from Columbia Univ. Recruited by Superintendent Horace Albright for the 1920 season. Married and pregnant by the next season. Became petroleum geologist.

Who was the first permanent female park ranger?

A

Jane Marguerite “Peg” Lindsley Arnold of Mammoth Hot Springs. BS and MS in bacteriology. Appointed 1921, first as a seasonal ranger. Her greatest adventure: skiing 143 miles around the park in winter.
