What is the difference between a population and a sample?

A
  • Population- the whole universe of cases (the larger group you want to generalized your findings to)
  • Sample- a section of the population you are actually going to include in the research

  • Parameter- a fact about the population
  • Statistic- a fact about the sample

  • Inferential- go beyond the sample to make statements about the characteristics of a much larger group
  • Descriptive- constructs simple descriptions of the characteristics of a sample
