Ovary:

Describe structure & function

A

Function:

  • Oogenesis: Production of Haploid female gametes (ova)
  • Sex hormones synthesis: Estrogen & Progesterone

Structure:

  1. Cortex
  • Epithelium
  • Tunica albuginea (CT)
  • Developing follicles: Primordial follicles (oocyte) surrounded by a single layer of flat granulosa cells

Q

Ovary Cortex

Describe the state of the ovary cortex at birth

A

Outer cortex:

•Primordial follicles (Oocytes)

  • •Fixed number(~400,000)
  • •Quiescent: (arrested in development)
  • Surrounded by a single layer of flat follicular cells
  • Stroma: spindle-shaped fibroblasts

Q

Describe the process of follicle selection

A

FSH triggers a subset of follicles to develop further
