Portal system - drains digstive organs into the portal vein
Caval system - drains the posterior body wall structures into the inferior vena cava
What is the role of the portal system?
Drains blood from the digestive organs and spleen through the liver before it is returned to the IVC
Veins of the portal system do not have valves
What is the role of the Caval system?
Drains blood from non-digestive organs directly into the IVC
Azygous system is connected to the Caval system

Left gastric - esophageal
Paraumbilical - superficial epigastric
Superior rectal - inferior rectal
Colic veins - retroperitoneal veins
