16
Q

how do you test for carbonate ions?

A

add hydrochloric acid and a gas will form
bubble the gas through limewater
a carbonate will produce limewater and CO2. It will go cloudy white.

17
Q

what is the chemical test for water?

A

add to anhydrous copper sulphate - will go blue

18
Q

what is the test for alkenes?

A

bromine water will go orange to colourless

19
Q

what is the physical test for water?

A

water freezes at 0 degrees.

water boils at 100 degrees

20
Q

how do you carry out the metal cation tests?

A

add sodium hydroxide

identify the precipitate

21
Q

in the metal cation tests what colour will the precipitate be if copper ions are present?

A

blue

22
Q

in the metal cation tests what colour will the precipitate be if iron (III) ions are present?

A

orange/brown

23
Q

in the metal cation tests what colour will the precipitate be if iron ions are present?

A

green

24
Q

what is the sulphate test?

A
  • add barium chloride

- white precipitate of barium sulphate will form is sulphate ions present.

25
Q

what is the test for ammonium?

A
  • add sodium hydroxide
  • warm it
  • test for ammonia
    damp red litmus goes blue
