What was the Dolfus affair?

A
  1. This was Hitlers first attempt of Anschluss. A group of Austrian nazis killed the Austrian leader who refused to join Austria and Germany together. The Austrian government regained control with Mussolini’s help and hitler denied having anything to do with it.

What was the Saar plebiscite?

A
  1. The Saar land was taken from Germany in the treaty of Versailles and the league have owned it for 15 years. The people living on Saar decided on a plebiscite and over 90% wanted to reunite with Germany.

  1. Hitler left the leagues disarmament conference in March 1935 and introduced military conscription he expanded his army to a million men and built an Air Force which the treaty.

What was the remilitarisation of the Rhineland?

A
  1. The treaty forbid troops in the Rhineland.
  2. League was too busy with Abyssinian crisis.
  3. Fra and USR signed Franco soviet pact which means they would help each other if they were under attack by Germany.
  4. Hitler saw this pact as a “threat” and sent troops into Rhineland on March 7th 1936.
  5. Hitler told troops to retreat if French army march in.

What was Anschluss with Austria 1938?

A
  1. Hitler wanted to unite Germany and Austria and had a good relationship with Mussolini.
  2. Austrian chancellor agreed to support the nazis and nazis marched into Austria and people cheered.
  3. 10th of March there was a plebiscite and 99% of Austria wanted Anschluss.
