Y:108 Flashcards

Climb and power on/off decsent

1
Q

What is the normal rate of decscent in a power on descent?

A

We aim for 500ft/min in power on descent.

(TIPS: Dont focus on the VSI showing the RoD, it is very sensitive and is show the RoD with some delay. Set your attitude, trim and then see where the VSI stabilizes.)

Q

The slip stream form the propeller cause a yaw to the ___. To counteract this in climbs we need to use ___ rudder.

A

The slip stream form the propeller cause a yaw to the left. To counteract this in climbs we need to use right rudder.

Q

We need to use the rudder to maintain our heading in climbs, why?

A

We need to use rudder in climbs due to the slip stream effect.

Q

What means with Vx and what is Vx in our cessna 172?

A

Vx is speed for max angle of climb, it is used to climb to a assigned altitude in the shortest distance possible. Vx in our cessna 172 is 62kt(C172S) and 60kt(C172R).

Q

If we are climbing with 90% and our speed is 85kt what should you do to increase it to 80kt?

A

Pitch down and maintain a lower nose attitude to increase the airspeed. (Place the engine cowling on the horizon is a good reference for 80kts)

Q

What means with Vy and what is Vy in our cessna 172?

A

Vy is speed for max rate of climb, it is used to climb to a assigned altitude in the shortest time possible. Vy in our cessna 172 is 70kt.

Q

What is the main purpose for practicing power off descents?

A

We practice power off descents to learn how to manoeuvre the aircraft at such a slow speed as Vmd which is the speed we would use in case of an engine failure.

Q

When we are in power off descent we use a speed called ___, and it´s the speed for ___. This speed in our Cessna 172 is ___.

A

When we are in power off descent we use a speed called Vmd, and its the speed for minimum drag. This speed in our Cessna 172 is 68kts C172S and 65kts C172R.

Q

Explain how you go from climb to level flight.

A

When going from a climb to level flight you: Pitch down to level flight attitude, hold your heading with the rudder and when speed increases towards our cruise speed we reduce power to 65%.
