Q

What is the ultimate source of energy within an ecosystem

A

The ultimate source of energy is sunlight. This is conserved as chemical energy in plants

Q

What are producers

A

Producers are photosynthetic organisms that manufacture organic substances using light energy, water, Co2, and ions

Q

What are consumers

A

Consumers are organisms that obtain their energy by feeding on other organisms, rather than from sunlight directly

Primary consumers eat producers

Secondary consumers eat primary consumers

Tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers

Q

What are saprobionts

A

Saprobiont’s are a group of organisms that break down complex materials in dead organisms into simple ones

Q

What do saprobionts release back into the ecosystem

A

Saprobionts release valuable minerals in a form that can be absorbed by plants and contribute to recycling

Q

What is a food chain

A

A basic means of displaying a feeding relationship in which the producers are eaten by primary consumers, which are eaten by secondary consumers, which are eaten by tertiary consumers

12
Q

Why is a food web a more accurate way of displaying energy transfer

A

Because within an ecosystem it is more than likely an organism has more than one food source, and that each organism is linked in some way.

Q

What is biomass

A

Biomass is the total mass of living material in a specific area at a given time

14
Q

Why is obtaining a measurement of biomass tricky

A

Because while fresh mass is relatively easy to obtain, it contains a varying amount of water which makes it an unreliable measurement

15
Q

How is biomass obtained

A

By measuring dry mass or carbon

16
Q

Why is biomass still unreliable when measuring dry mass

A

Because it is obtained through measurements on a small scale, therefore it isn’t likely to be representative

17
Q

How is the energy store in dry mass measured

A

Bomb Calirometry

18
Q

How is Bomb Calirometry carried out

A

A sample of dry material is weighed and burnt in a closed chamber, called a bomb, with pure oxygen

The closed chamber is submerged in water and the temperature of the water is taken before combustion occurs

Because we know the amount of energy required to heat up 1 gram of water by 1 degrees, energy store in biomass can be calculated by measuring the mass required to heat up water by 1 degree

19
Q

Units for energy store in dry mass

A

kJ kg-1

20
Q

Units for biomass (land)

A

Grams per metre squared

g m-2

21
Q

Units for biomass (pond)

A

Grams per cubic metre

g m-3

22
Q

General unit for biomass

A

Dry mass per given area, in a given time
