  • In July the army imposed a 34-hour curfew on the Lower Falls area of Belfast while a house to house weapons search was being carried out
  • Success: A number of weapons and explosives were discovered
  • Downfall: The search was a disaster politically. It damaged the army’s previously good relationships with the nationalist community and increased IRA membership
