Issues of social control Flashcards

1
Q

Description

A

• Social control in psychology is using psychological knowledge to change the behaviour of an individual/group for the ‘benefit’ of wider society
• Those who don’t follow social norms or are in the minority may be the target of social control
• There may be aspects of formal (official people controlling behaviour) or informal social control (the other members of society through judgement etc)
• It is a concern for society/Psychology if our ideas, theories and studies are used to control people and force a change in their behaviour against their will (especially as this ties to ethical principles of respect and responsibility)
Then outline the ideas of the theories/studies and how they fit the debate
