Who were suffragists?

A

By 1900, over 50,000 women were members of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage societies (suffrage is another word for vote). They were known as the suffragists.

A

The suffragists collected petitions, wrote to parliament and went on marches to highlight their cause.

What went wrong with the suffragists movement?

A

By 1905, they had got nowhere. This is because they were not getting enough attention and it was not affecting the people enough. People did not sympathies for them.

By 1905, some of the suffragists decided to change their tactic. Know as the suffragettes, their motto was ‘deeds not words’.

What did the suffragettes do?

A

They thought the best way to highlight their cause was to commit spectacular stunts that would guarantee them being in the news paper. They disrupted political meetings, chai ed themselves to railings in Downing Street, pelted politicians with eggs, set fire to churches and through stones at parliament’s window.

When the suffragettes were put in prison what did they do?

A

The suffragettes went on hunger strikes so had to be let out pf prison. Although soon they were being forced fed. When the women were let out and did something wrong they were brought straight back to prison. This was called the cat and mouse
