Lecture 11 - Adapting to climate change Flashcards

1
Q

How have UK birds changed in phenology over the past 57 years?

A

The bird UK laying date is related to temperature or rainfall for 31 of 36 bird species. Generally things advance further.

Q

Why is early arrival useful for species?

A

Because it allows exploitation of favourable climates earlier in the year and early access to the best nest sites & abundant food leads to improved survival of young.

Q

What are the downsides of early arrival of species?

A

Basically more at risk for extreme events, can K.O. a population. Also there may be a temporal mismatch between species and their food etc.

Q

What is microhabitat buffering?

A

Microhabitats refer to fine scale features in a habitat, they act as thermal buffers allowing species to exist under harsh conditions.

Q

What happens to frog arboreality as temperature and moisture increases?

A

It reduces, as temperature and moisture gradients are steeper at the tree level than elevation level.
