1
Q

What is aerobic respiration?

Q

What is respiration used for?

A

Living cells need energy to carry out their basic functions of life
In animals, respiration is transferred to make muscles contract
Mammals and birds maintain a constant internal body temperature

Q

When you work out why does your body require glucose?

A

As your body needs more glucose and oxygen to respirate and gain energy

Q

What happens to your body during exercise?

A

Your heart rate increases
Your breathing rate increases
Glycogen stores in the muscles is converted back to glucose

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A

An exothermic resection where glucose is broken down without oxygen to produce lactic acid in animals, whilst a small amount of energy is transferred to the cell

Q

Why do you continue to breathe hard after exercise?

A

As your body is breaking down the lactic acid with the oxygen being breathed in- they are paying off the oxygen debt

16
Q

Give examples of metabolic reactions?

A

The conversion of glucose to starch
The reactions of respiration/ photosynthesis
The formation of lipid molecules from one glycerol molecule and three fatty acid molecules

17
Q

What is the role of the liver?

A

Detoxification of poisonous substances such as ethanol
Passing the breakdown products into the blood so they can be excreted in the urine
Breaking down old cells and storing iron until it is needed to synthesise more blood cells
Removing lactic acid

18
Q

What happens to lactic acid in the liver?

A

The liver is where lactic acid is converted back to glucose and potentially turned into glycogen and stored
