16
Q

What are heuristics?

A

Mental shortcuts

  • availability
  • representativeness
  • Anchoring and adjustment
17
Q

What are stereotypes?

A

schemas applied to groups

- Generalizations of how members think or act.

18
Q

Memory is _________.

A

reconstructive

19
Q

What is self-fulling prophecy in relation to schemas?

A

When our expectations about someone influence the way we treat them, and the way we treat them leads that person to act in the way we expected.

20
Q

How do we select schemas?

A

TWO WAYS:
Why is the baby crying?

  1. Long term familiar reminders
ex. family history of temper tantrums
  2. Recent exposure (priming)
ex. watching documentary on child abuse.

RONALD EXAMPLE

21
Q

Schema durability

A

Schemas stick in our heads.. even when proven wrong

22
Q

What are heuristics?

A

mental shortcuts people use to make judgements quickly and efficiently

  • availability
  • representative
  • anchoring and adjustment
23
Q

What is availability heuristic?

A

making judgements based on how easily something comes to mind

** When we assume easy recall –> we think its more common

24
Q

What is representativeness heuristic?

A

a mental shortcut where we classify something by how similar it sounds to a typical case.

25
Q

What is anchoring and adjustment in relation to heuristics?

A

a mental shortcut where we start with a figure in mind and adjust (up or down) from this point, often failing to adjust as much as needed.
