What is theme?
An insight about human life revealed in literary work
What are some characteristics of a good theme?
Must be unique & hard to find
What happens in rising action?
foreshadows what may happen to characters and ultimately leads up to climax
How do some authors change the story-telling arc?
they start at climax, go to exposition (introduction), and then to the resolution
What is a protagonist?
The main character of a story who the reader roots for
What is an antagonist?
the character who opposes the protagonist
What is an antihero?
When the protagonist is a villain
What is a foil?
A character who is opposite of a character to emphasize their unique qualities
What is third person limited?
focuses on one person
How do authors mix different types of point of view?
They start with first person & travel to omniscient, letting readers see into all of the character’s thoughts?
What is third person objective?
narrator shows unbiased point of view w/o showing any of the character’s thoughts
What is third person omniscient?
Sees into all of the character’s thoughts
