Adaptations Flashcards

Q

What does the DNA found within an organism’s cell make up and what is formed?

A

The DNA found within an organism’s cells makes up its genetic structure and form structures called chromosomes.

Q

What do chromosomes do?

A

Each organism has different genes that code for characteristics to help it survive in its environment.

Q

What does the adaptation of an organism do?

A

Organisms have general adaptations that allow them to
survive and function.
Organisms of the same taxonomic class will share general adaptations, regardless of their environment/habitat.
Organisms also have specific adaptations that have evolved to make an organism particularly suited to its
environment/habitat.

Q

Why do organisms adapt?

A

To compete for resources including food and mates.

To acquire a stable and adequate source of resources which increases the chance of survival and reproduction.

Q

What is Behavioural Adaptation?

A

Behaviours exhibited by an organism that increases its chance of survival and reproduction. Eg. migrating, huddling, courtship, hibernation, nocturnalism, estivation etc.

Q

What are Structural Adaptations?

A

Physical characteristics that an organism possesses which
increase its chance of survival and reproduction. Eg. Fur, Stripes, Streamlined shape, plants; thick bark, flat leaves etc.

Q

What are Physiological Adaptations?

A

Metabolic processes that occur within (internal) the organism to increase its chance of survival and reproduction. Eg. venom, gas, xerophytes; stomata etc.
