rectal bleeding

When to refer?

• symptoms longer than 3 weeks
• unresponsive to 1 week of OTC tx
• blood in stools may indicate underlying condition
• ab pain, N/V
• haemorrhoid preps not licensed in pregnancy

Tx?

1. local anaesthetics (benzocaine/lidocaine)
2. SKin protecting agents (Kaolin, ZnO)
3. atringents
4. topical corticosteriods reduces inflammation and swelling - only use over 18 years of age and for max 7 days

What are side effects?

Answer 5

local anaethetics may cause sensitisation and so they should be used for a max of 2 weeks
