what is Aristotle’s 8th virtue ethic
only voluntary actions can be virtuous
(8) Pirate example
-Pirates invade a ship, lock up the captain and steal the cargo
-captain can’t be blamed for the loss of cargo s he had no choice
(8) Ship with crew example
-captain throws off cargo to save crew in a storm
-he acted virtuously as he made a choice by judging the virtuous thing
(8) Ship without crew example
-captain throws off cargo to save himself in a storm
-he did not act virtuously as he made a cowardly choice, he did not show the mean of courage
(8) Oedipus example
-Athenian tragedy, Oedipus was told by an Oracle that he would kill his father and have relations with his mother, he then blinded himself after doing it
-he does everything he can to stop it but it still end up happening
-as he tried everything he could do to stop it he ultimately acted virtuously, including his remorse
conclusion
-a virtuous action requires a positive intention
-not sufficient to have a desire or wish to do something
-one must also have performed some act that can reasonably expect a result for the desired outcome
