Vision Statement of Profession of PT
“Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience”
Mission of the APTA
- Further profession’s role in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of movement dysfunction
- Enhancement of health and functional abilities of members of the public
Requirements of membership
- graduation or enrollment
- signed pledge to comply with Code of Ethics (PT)
- pay dues
Districts
- most local organizational unit in APTA
Chapters (ie. IPTA)
- state membership
- can assess dues (district can’t)
- provide mechanism for members to participate at state level and have representation at national level
Sections
- made of members with similar interests
- focus on special areas of practice
Assemblies
- similar to sections; members with common interests
- difference = composed of members of same category
- can be state or national level
- only national assemble is Student Assembly
ACAPT (American Council of Academic Physical Therapy)
Purpose = promote excellence in PT education including clinical and post-professional education.
Board of Directors (BOD)
- 6 officers and 9 directors
- carry out mandates and policies established by HOD
- Manage affairs of APTA
House of Delegates (HOD)
- highest policy-making body of APTA
- voting delegates from all chapters
- nonvoting delegates from each section, PTA caucus, student assembly, BOD
- just over 400 members
American Board of PT Residency and Fellowship Education
Accredits post-professional residency and fellowship training programs
American Board of PT Specialists
Recognize Its w/ advance knowledge and skills in an area of clinical specialization
CAPTE
Accredits PT and PTA programs, establishes standards for accreditations
Foundation of PT
Provides funding for research in PT
Federation of State Boards of PT
Coordinates activities among state boards of PT
Manages licensing exams
