Respiratory failure Flashcards
at what O2 kpa value is a pt hypoxaemic
<10
what O2 kpa value is the definition of resp distress
<8
type 1 resp failure
low O2, normal CO2
type 2 resp failure
low O2, high CO2
types of non-invasive ventilation
CPAP (1 pressure. also called PEAP (positive expiratory airway pressure). holds lungs open so it is easy to start breath
BIPAP - two pressures
low O2 is due to what? therefore what ventilation?
PEAP. need to help keep the airways open as well as give 100% o2. prevents airway collapse at the end of expiration (type 1 resp failure)
high CO2 is due to what? what ventilation?
poor ventilation. need bipap to help them ventilate better (T2 resp failure)
contraindication to NIV
asthma (increases haemothorax risk). it is used in COPD
pneumothorax
agitated (pulling off mask)
airway not patent
