A herd of ewes had an abortion storm in which 80% of animals are affected. All stages of gestation are affected, and lambs that are born are very weak. On the placentas, cotyledons have white foci of necrosis. What’s your primary differential?

A

Toxoplasma gondii
Pathognomonic signs of T.gondii are bright to dark red cotyledons w/white foci of necrosis… intercotyledonary areas of placenta are normal

A 3-year-old MN lab from the Ohio River valley basin presents w/chronic lg bowel diarrhea & signs of respiratory dz (cough, fever). A LN smear shows round-ovoid encapsulated structures inside MF & giant cells. The organisms have thin cell walls, w/thin clear zone b/t cell wall & cytoplasm. What’s the Dx?

A

Histoplasmosis
River valleys of US; associated w/bird & bat droppings in soil
Big dDx is Blastomycosis —respiratory presentation, easier to see on H&E stain

An adult tortoise presents w/recent history of cloacal straining and depression. Gentle manipulation/rocking of the animal allows palpation of a firm, coelomic structure. What’s the presumptive dx?

A

Retained eggs (need rads to detect)
