Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes. The primary function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen to body cells and deliver carbon dioxide to the lungs. Your red blood cells contain haemoglobin that binds to oxygen.

These cells help fight infections by attacking bacteria, viruses, and germs that invade the body. White blood cells originate in the bone marrow but circulate throughout the bloodstream.

Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are a component of blood whose function is to react to bleeding from blood vessel injury by clumping, thereby initiating a blood clot.
