MAIOR E MAIS PROXIMAL RAMO DA ACI Cavernosa

The meningohypophyseal trunk, also known as the posterior trunk, is a branch of the C4 (cavernous) segment of the internal carotid artery. In contrast to the inferolateral trunk, it is almost always identified at autopsy. However, due to its small size, the meningohypophyseal trunk is seen only in a minority of cerebral angiograms 2.

It has three branches:

  • Inferior hypophyseal artery: to the pituitary gland, contributing to the “inferior hypophyseal arterial circle”
  • Marginal tentorial artery (Bernasconi-Casanari artery): to the meninges of the tentorium
  • Clival branches: to the meninges overlying the clivus
