Access/Egress, Inadequate water supplies, Pressurised containers, Fibres - Asbestos, Chemicals, Landfill gas, Biohazards, Unstable ground, Dangerous (guard) dogs..Etc etc
What gases can be produced here?
Methane
Carbon dioxide
Hydrogen
(can be explosive when mixed with air)
Think water run off
A number of biohazards may be present in refuse..:
Clinical waste including hypodermic needles
Animal waste and carcasses
Vermin and other infestations
Human waste
Bacterial and viral infections such as leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) hep C and tetanus
FF’s may suffer injury from the surface of a refuse site collapsing..;
The instability of the refuse - when stacked
Under burning of refuse resulting in creation of large voids
Application of water affecting the stability of stacks
Hazards within refuse chutes or bin rooms?
Blocked chutes - unstable contents may collapse
The electrical power supply within the bin room
Products of combustion within the compartment
Is it ok to use their machinery?
Any available site plant must only be operated by competent on site staff under the direction of the IC

If fire involves hazmat or is emitting large volumes of smoke and affecting nearby premises, or the road or rail services, IC should consider?
Evac nearby residents/inform them..
Closing roads
Notify Environment Agency + Public health england
Railway procedure
Use of hazard manager (FireMet) via HMEPO to plot hazard zone and smoke travel
Who would you do a 7.2(d) in conjunction with?
Fire safety inspecting officer and Environment Agency
Who would you request at a refuse site?
HMEPO, EA and public Health England (PHE)
