8.2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Leading strand
A strand of DNA that is synthesized in the same direction as the replication fork
Lagging strand
DNA strand that is synthesized discontinuously in DNA replication
Semi-discontinuous
A mode of DNA replication in which one strand is synthesized continuously, while the other is synthesized discontinuously
Semi-conservative
Ensures genetic continuity by using one parental DNA strand as a template to make a new complementary strand
Okazaki Fragment
Short segments of DNA formed at the discontinuous synthesis of the lagging strand during replication of DNA
Helicase
Unzips DNA at the beginning of replication
Primase
Short RNA primers must be added
DNA Polymerase III
The new enzyme adds new DNA nucleotides to build complementary strands
DNA polymerase I
Remove DNA primers and replace them with DNA
Ligase
Separate DNA fragments that were created separately and get joined together by connecting sugar to phosphate
