When did German women get the vote?
1918
What was the place of a women in 1920s Germany?
- had many rights and freedoms
- had the right to vote
- equal pay to men if they worked in the government
- attended university and became lawyers and doctors
What were the Nazis view on women?
- worried about the declining number of births during Weimar period which resulted in career driven women
- low birth rate and lower population didn’t fit in with their plans to expand Germanys territory
- patriotic duty was to stay at home, have lots of children and look after husband
- not equal to men
- stick to 3 Ks
What are the 3 Ks?
Kinder, Kirche and Küche

What happened to all the women with jobs after Weimar period?
All sacked and jobs were discouraged. They were banned from the jury service as they are unable to think without emotion
What did they do to encourage women to have children?
- In 1938 loans were given to newly married couples(equivalent of a years wages) to encourage children.
- on the birth of the first child they kept a quarter and so on. 4 children’s meant they can keep all the money
What did the Nazis ban?
- contraception and abortion
- slimming was discouraged
- smoking, wearing trousers or high heels
What was the motherhood medal?
Awarded to the women who has the most children

‘Fountain of life’, a Nazi movement to stop the population decline in Germany. Girls taught in school it was their duty to produce racially pure children and SS men were accepted as racially pure fathers. If a young girl became pregnant and wasn’t married she received the best medical treatment at the Lebensborn Centre.
What do the Nazi women’s organizations do?
Set up to develop an elite female group dedicated to Nazi ideas

- However they needed women back at work because more men were joining the army and workers needed to run factories they weren’t called up

Women with a history of mental illnesses, hereditary diseases or antisocial behavior could be forcibly sterilised
