Opportunistic pathogens
= cause disease in immunocompromised individuals

= causes damage/ disease in healthy individuals

Fungi persist in symbiosis with host + bacteria

Disrupting the balance (via mucosal damage, antibiotics + immune defects) promotes fungal outgrowth + disease
