what is the purpose of this scene?
to set tragedy into motion. Stanley’s rage set against Blanche’s dangerously misguided playfulness- her actions are dangerous
Stella and Blanche are going to Galatoires, why might Stanley hate this?
Galatoires is a high class restaurant, which reminds him of their higher class and how he is an immigrant. he hates to be ridiculed by his wife and women in general
what is Stanley’s primitive instinct?
to drag her down to his level using sexuality and dominance to intimidate her
what is an example of Stanley showing his class difference?
he fails to comprehend that Blanche’s jewellery is inexpensive costume jewellery. he doesn’t like that Stella mocks him for not realising this
what does Blanche’s bathing symbolise?
washing away her past and the guilt of her husbands death, as well as her many sexual encounters, trying purify herself.
why does Blanche’s bathing cause tension?
the apartment is small and there is only one bathroom. the heat from the bathroom is oppressive and causes agitation
