They were submarines that would fire torpedoes from miles away.

Britain had their supply boats sail close together, and sail in convoys guarded by armed vessels.
What was the “Dazzle Approach”?
The Dazzle Approach was paining ships with crazy patterns to make it hard for the U-boats to tell which direction they are going. This made it hard for the U-boats to accurately aim their torpedoes.
What type of people did Wilkinson’s crew mainly consist of?
Women from the Women Rescue Camouflage Corps.
