AWS

A

Purpose - provide driver with an audible and visual warning. If fails to respond will apply emergency brake.
Consists of track and train equipment.
Track equipment is a AWS magnet. Positioned 180 metres ahead of a signal. Also ahead of Level crossings, PSR warning restriction, TSR, ESR and depot exits.
Train equipment is receiver, AWS visual indicator and AWS audible indicator.
Audible will give a clear indication (bell) for a green aspect or a warning indication (horn) for a cautionary signal or warning boards. 2.4 secs to acknowledge.
Visual is black if green aspect or driver yet to acknowledge or yellow when acknowledged.

TPWS

A

Purpose is to apply a brake demand where overspeed or SPAD.
Consists of track and train equipment.
Track equipment is OSS loop and TSS loop.
TSS loop is in 4 foot at the associated signal. Energised when signal at danger.
OSS has arming and trigger loop. Arming loop will set internal timer and if train passes over trigger loop within a designated time it indicates that the train is speeding and apply a brake demand.
Train equipment is TPWS receiver, TPWS control Panel, acknowledge button, temporary isolation switch and full isolation switch.

Obstruction - a train has to return or proceed from or to a blocked line
Over run - a train has overrun the platform by less than 400 metres and needs to return
