  • fermentation- yields final electron acceptor is organic molecules
  • ok when substrates are plentiful
  • oxygen usually toxic to anaerobic bacteria

Many are ‘facultative anaerobes’ e.g. E.coli
- can switch between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism
