Sentences and Punctuation [8]
To focus the reader. Work well at the start of a piece.
E.g. Education
Can change the pace, stopping the story, or speeding it up.
E.g. This has to stop.
E.g. Then he has homework. Then more revision.
Can help us prompt the reader to re-think their opinion.
E.g. But why is education so important?
Good for expert or celebrity quotations.
E.g. “English is preparation for life.”
E.g. ”People ignore good parenting at their peril.”
The same phrase in two or three sentences in a row builds rhythm and tension:
E.g. The forgotten students. The forgotten families. The whole areas of the community, forgotten by the government.
Can build up a detailed description.
E.g. Education is essential: it helps us be happier, more confident and more successful.
Can help to explain a more complicated situation.
E.g. Although the effects haven’t been seen yet, the early signs are there.
Can add extra information, almost like a whisper to the reader E.g. The effects of travel (which many people have not experienced themselves) are beneficial in many ways.
