Respiration Flashcards
what kind of reaction is respiration
Respiration is an exothermic reaction
what happens in aerobic respiration
glucose reacts with oxygen in the mitochondria of cells to give carbon dioxide, water and energy
what’s the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
what’s the symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H20 + energy
in plant and yeast cells what is glucose converted into
in plant and yeast cells glucose is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide
what’s the word equation for the conversion of glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide
Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide
what is the process of glucose to ethanol known as in yeast
this process is known as fermentation
what is produced via the process of fermantation
Bread and Alcohol
what happens in anaerobic respirations for humans
Glucose is not broken down completely, making it a less efficient way of transferring energy than aerobic respiration.
in animals what is glucose converted to in anaerobic respiration
Glucose → lactic acid
when does anaerobic respiration happen
when insufficient (not enough) oxygen reaches the muscles during periods of intense activity.
what are the 4 key differences between Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration
1) Oxygen is needed for aerobic but not anaerobic
2) Aerobic respiration fully breaks down glucose. Anaerobic respiration partially breaks down glucose
3) Aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide and water. Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid in animals and CO2 and ethanol in plants and yeast
4) Aerobic respiration produces much more ATP than anaerobic respiration
what is a respirometer used for
a respirometer is used to measure how much oxygen is used up in aerobic respiration by organisms such as insects or germinating seeds
explain the Respirometer Test
1) The organisms are put in an airtight container along with soda lime, which absorbs the carbon dioxide they produce.
2) When the organisms use up oxygen, the coloured liquid moves along the ruler scale.
3) This can be repeated to show the effect of temperature on the rate of aerobic respiration.
What is the name given to the sum of all the chemical reactions that happen in an organism?
Metabolism
