- Immigrants expected jobs, freedom and a better life upon arriving in America. They thought the “Roads were paved with gold.”
- In reality, there were millions of industrial jobs for the Immigrants, but they had to work very long hours, for very low pay, in unsafe conditions.
- Immigrants often faced prejudice & discrimination because the Americans feared different cultures being brought into their country, & were afraid of economic competition.
- For example, Immigrants could easily replace American workers for lower pay in the industrial jobs
Describe the process of acculturation, and explain how immigrants adapted their own traditions to American culture
- Acculturation is when Immigrants hold onto their old traditions while adapting to a new culture.
- At home, immigrants ate their own foods, spoke their own language, & tried to keep their traditional religions.
- Outside the home, Immigrants used American schools, factories, & the political system.
- An example of acculturation is; Mexican Immigrants developed a language called Chuco. Chuco was a blend of English & Spanish because the children learned English in school, so the parents would try to learn it from the children, but ended up blending the 2 languaged together
