Clinical Chemistry Flashcards
- Paired organs considered as the body’s major “waste sweeper”
- Main job is to filter blood (eliminate waste products)
KIDNEY
4 Test for Clinical Chemistry
- KIDNEY(RENAL FUNCTION TESTS)
- LIVER FUNCTION TESTS
- CARDIAC FUNCTION TESTS
- TUMOR MARKERS
Waste product of muscle metabolism
CREATININE
Sample used by Creatinine
- URINE
* SERUM
- Sample used: serum
- Waste product of protein catabolism
- 90% is excreted in the urine.
BLOOD UREA NITROGEN
- Used to check how well the kidneys are working
- Estimates how much blood passes through the glomeruli each minute
- Unit: mL/min
GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE
- Organ responsible for the synthesis of many organic substances (proteins) except for antibodies.
- Detoxifies the body against noxious substances
- Synthesize clotting factors
LIVER
Tests to tell the condition of the liver:
• Synthesized by liver
• Sample should be protected from light as it degrades if exposed and may report falsely decreased level
BILIRUBIN
3 Types of Liver Enzyme Tests
- ALANINE TRANSAMINASE(SGPT)
- ASPARTATE TRANSAMINASE(SGOT)
- ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE
4 TEST TO DETERMINE THE CONDITION OF THE LIVER:
• BILIRUBIN • LIVER ENZYME TESTS • TOTAL SERUM PROTEIN TESTS • PROTHROMBIN TIME -platelets/clotting factors -plasma
- To evaluate whether one’s heart is healthy or not
* Patients who manifested episodes of myocardial infarction (heart attack) as manifested by chest pain.
CARDIAC FUNCTION TESTS
Most sensitive and specific test for myocardial damage
TROPONIN TEST
- Along with troponin, ordered as a cardiac biomarker to help diagnose or rule out a heart attack.
- Increase later than troponin but not specific and will not stay elevated for long as troponin
MYOGLOBIN
Other Cardiac Enzymes(3)
- Creatine Kinase (CK-MB)
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
- Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)
- A biomarker indicative of an inherent cancerous condition
* Sample used: serum
Tumor Markers (Special Chemistry Tests)
