8.4 Chemical Families Flashcards
(6 cards)
Chemical family
Group of elements that have similar properties and form compounds with similar properties
Alkali metals
-first column
-ion charge of +1
-soft , low density, that can be cut with knife
-commonly found as ions in salt and seawater
-Not found free in nature because they react with air and water
- Most reactive metals
-Good conductors
-Low melting point
-silver grey colour
Alkaline earth metals
-second column
-ion charge of +2
-hard, have low density
-react with air and water
-found as ions in rock minerals
-colour silvery white
-Good conductors
- very reactive
-High melting point
Halogens
-second to right
-not found free in nature because they react with many other elements
-ion charge of 1-
-All toxic in element form
-Range of bright colours as gases
-low boiling point
-very toxic
Noble gases
-Last column
-non reactive
-tasteless, colourless, odourless, -non-toxic (except radon)
- very low boiling point
-Ion charge 0
Hydrogen
-forms either positive or negative ions
-Behaves either as highly reactive metal or highly reactive non metal, dependenkng on element it combined with.
- colourless
-lowest density of all elements
-extremely low boiling point
-ion charge +1 or -1
- very reactive burns in air
