the area between the lungs is the mediastinum, it contains the heart and its veins and arteries, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, thymus gland and lymph nodes

regions of the thorax and abdomen

A
  • this is one of the descriptive systems which divide the abdomen and lower portion of the thorax into nine parts
  • these descriptive systems are used to refer to the various areas of the abdomen when charting and discussing a patient who presents with abdominal pain or other abdominal symptoms
  • symptoms in each region will suggest certain sources of the pain and disease processes which might be occurring
  • this system divided the abdomen like a tic-tac-toe board. first look at the umbilical region in the middle
  • pain in the umbilical region may represent liver, gallbladder, colon, small intestines or pancreas
  • pain in the epigastric area may also be liver or gallbladder, as well as stomach or an early sign of an appendicitis, or coming from the heart
